Running the first company to
deliver Internet training courses commercially in the
UK had its penalties when Informed Business Services became
inundated by calls
from individuals seeking help and support to get onto the Internet.
It quickly
became apparent that this was unsustainable for
Karen Beesley
and her staff and so she suggested
the formation of
a user
group. The UK Internet User Group
was duly formed in 1993 and Karen was elected
Chairman of the group.
The group
met twice a month in the City of London to discuss both the various
technical aspects of the Internet
and the Web, its emerging side-kick, as well as to listen to
presentations from the growing number of companies
with an interest in the commercialisation of the Internet. The
group
survived until early 1998 when Karen was
expecting her first baby and in the absence of anyone committed enough to
take if forward it was decided to
close the group since it was felt, by then, that there was a number of titles in the book
shops and news kiosks
to satisfy a growing thirst for knowledge about the Internet.
